How It Works
The Gastric Band involves laparoscopically placing a silicone band around the stomach to reduce the amount of food eaten. Smaller meals mean a reduced calorie intake, which results in weight loss.
This treatment is recommended for people with a BMI of 30 or higher, with health complications such as Diabetes, Heart Disease, Stroke, Infertility, Joint pain and other non-communicable diseases.
The Band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, creating a new small stomach “pouch” above it, leaving the larger part of the stomach below. The food storage area is reduced to the small upper stomach, which can hold only a small amount of food at any one time. The procedure is only 30-45 minutes long and most clients are back to work within a week.
One of the main benefits of the band is that it is adjustable. This allows the individual, together with the Doctor, to find the correct restriction size to best control their hunger. The Band is connected by a tube to an adjustment port under the skin, which allows saline to be introduced (which tightens it), or removed (which loosens it).
