Dr. Lyudmila Shchukina

Dr. Lyudmila Shchukina is a Family Physician, MMed, UA and co-founder of Holistic Living and the East African Bariatric Center. She specializes in the diagnosis, management and treatment of obesity and its related comorbidities.
Dr. Shchukina is also a co-founder of the “Method of Psychological Correction of Eating Habits” created by Associate Professor I. Varaksin, and has been successfully practicing this method in Kenya for more than two decades. She graduated from high school with a Gold Medal and later studied Internal Medicine at Vinnitsa Medical University in Ukraine.

Her extensive experience in in-patient and out-patient settings, evoked in her a strong interest in and passion for obesity treatment. Through research and practice, Dr. L. Shchukina was firmly convinced that excess weight and obesity are the main causes of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis, stroke and infertility. It was this conclusion which shaped the next 20 years of her medical career.

She uses the unique approach of targeting multiple root factors that contribute to obesity – psychological, social, metabolic, anatomical and environmental. This is what sets Holistic Living and East African Bariatric Center apart as pioneers in tackling obesity and its related co-morbidities. In Kenya, faced with strong resistance to weight loss in many of her MORBIDLY obese patients, Dr. Shchukina, in collaboration with laparoscopic/bariatric surgeons, actively participated in the development of Bariatric Surgery, introducing various bariatric procedures as a choice to her patients.

Dr. Shchukina also studied Oral Hydrotherapy of the Digestive System at the Gastroenterological Health Farm, Uzhhorod National Medical University, Ukraine. This procedure is used at Holistic Living as a treatment for many gastroenterological disorders as well as body detox. It was developed by fellow European Gastroenterologist Prof. M. M. Zavidyak. The Obesity Awareness Organization (OAO) is yet another of Dr. Shchukina’s efforts. She established the non-governmental organization to combat obesity in Kenya. For three years running, she has been a key organizer of the Annual East Africa Obesity Symposium. Dr. Shchukina is a member of The Obesity Society (TOS), Association for Integrative and Psychosomatic Medicine (AIPM), Kenya Association of Physicians (KAP), Kenya Association of Family Physicians (KAFP), Kenya Medical Association (KMA) and East African Diabetic Study Group (EADSG).
