Let us look into what this surgery is. Bariatric surgery is also commonly known as weight loss surgery, which means specialised surgical procedures that are designed to induce weight loss in obese and overweight people with health conditions. Also known as Weight Loss Surgery, these procedures have helped save many lives around the world and helped many more in managing their weight. Types of Bariatric Surgery

There are two types of bariatric surgery procedures available namely; The Gastric Sleeve and The Gastric Bypass surgeries. We will look at each of these in turn, so that we can all understand what actually happens during these weight loss procedures and how it can achieve the desired result of weight loss for you. Being invasive procedures, they will require some hospital stay for recuperation under the care of a capable medical team. Since everyone’s case is different, you will be walked through all the options available to you by our lead bariatric surgeon, Prof. Almantas Maleckas, who has more than 20 years of experience in these procedures.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Turning our attention to the gastric sleeve procedure (which is also known as vertical sleeve gastrectomy), what’s notable here is the removal of approximately 75% of the stomach. This reduces the size of the stomach into a sort of tube or “sleeve” that can hold less food, thereby leaving you feeling fuller on less food consumed. By inducing these feelings of satiety, you will find yourself reducing your food intake significantly and hence reducing the amount of calories you consume meaning you will start to lose the extra weight. This procedure also results in hormonal changes such as reduced secretion of hunger hormones that will make you feel much less hungry.

The basic concept is keeping the body in a state of caloric deficit so that one can be able to shed the excess weight. This type of weight loss surgery has become the most commonly performed kind of bariatric surgery worldwide. After this procedure, people lose about 60-70% of their excess weight over the following one to two-year period.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

What is gastric bypass surgery you ask? Well, let me enlighten you on what it entails. In a nutshell, this procedure also known as the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, a small pouch is created that bypasses the stomach and attaches to the intestine. Unlike the gastric sleeve surgery, this procedure is usually reversible.

It is often recommended to people with a body mass index of 40 or higher; people with a body mass index of 35+ with an existing health condition are also candidates for this procedure. Gastric bypass helps you lose weight by restricting the amount of food your stomach can hold, limiting the amount of calories and nutrients your body absorbs and changing your gut hormones, making you feel fuller for longer and suppressing your appetite. This can also lead to the reversal of obesity-caused metabolic syndrome. Patients who undergo gastric bypass surgery typically have a very good long-lasting weight loss journey, often losing up to 80% of their excess weight.

The procedure has long lasting results and is a very good resolution to obesity-related health problems. Those are the two kinds of bariatric surgeries performed in Kenya, they are the 2 most common and most effective weight loss surgeries. Though non-invasive, I would like to give an honourable mention to another procedure that has proven to be quite effective; the gastric balloon procedure. The use of intragastric balloons is an alternative to surgery, in terms of losing weight. Being an endoscopic procedure, the balloon is inserted into the stomach where it will stay and partially fill the stomach volume inducing satiety, where you feel full after little consumption of food.

This thereby reduces the amount of calories consumed leading the body to be in caloric deficit and thus lose excess weight. Come, together we will uncover and learn everything about medical weight loss. For more information visit: https://nairobibariatric.co.ke/
